New Covers!

I've been dying to make this announcement and some of y'all have already seen these out on the web, but I'm getting new covers for both The Forest of Hands and Teeth and The Dead-Tossed Waves!  The new FHT cover will be on the trade paperback (out February 9, 2010) and might possibly on future hardcovers. The DTW cover will be on the hardcover (out March 9, 2010) and the eventual paperback release (prob in 2011).

I can't tell you how lucky I feel to have two new fantastic covers!  What do y'all think?

And here's the cover copy for The Dead-Tossed Waves:
Gabry lives a quiet life. As safe a life as is possible in a town trapped between a forest and the ocean, in a world teeming with the dead, who constantly hunger for those still living. She's content on her side of the Barrier, happy to let her friends dream of the Dark City up the coast while she watches from the top of her lighthouse.

But there are threats the Barrier cannot hold back. Threats like the secrets Gabry's mother thought she left behind when she escaped from the Sisterhood and the Forest of Hands and Teeth. Like the cult of religious zealots who worship the dead. Like the stranger from the forest who seems to know Gabry. And suddenly, everything is changing.

One reckless moment, and half of Gabry's generation is dead, the other half imprisoned. Now Gabry only knows one thing: she must face the forest of her mother's past in order to save herself and the one she loves.

Both are so pretty but the one for Forest is LOVELY. Love it! Congrats! :)

Both are — Wow! — the top one is especially haunting.

I'd definitely pick that up off the shelf to see what it's about.

I love the covers! awesome :)

however...i'll be the voice of dissent and say that actually, I prefer the original cover of FHT over the new one. I think the original looks more "darkly gorgeous." Beautiful cover illustrations seem to do more for me than "photograph" cover art. :( @ no cover illustration for upcoming DTW - although, the one above is pretty too :)

I like the new cover but it looks so modern-day girl. I prefer the old FHT. I totally LOVE the old cover...it's the whole reason I wanted to read it in the first place. :)

I LOVE them! I might have to buy another copy of The Forest of Hands and Teeth!

Wow, Carrie, those are amazing covers!

And that cover blurb just makes me even more excited to get DTW. March seems so far off!!

Hey Carrie,

I think the covers are nice, but I'm with GG & Kiirsi, the old covers were PHENOMENAL. I was especially looking forward to DWTs 'matching' cover, so I'm a little bummed the new one won't fit with the old.

Yes, I am a nerd who cares about such things.

Absolutely loving the new covers. However I'm delighted to have the first edition cover.

The dead tossed waves sounds like an awesome sequel to the 'Forest of Hands and Teeth'. (Hugs)Indigo

I love both covers! And I'm sure I'll buy it when it comes out with the new cover, but I'm really glad I have the first cover as well. It's a major keeper on my shelf.

DTW sounds awesome and I can't wait to read it. :)

They are interesting but I think I preferred the old covers and would have liked the books to match. Oh well!

I'm so glad all y'all like them! Wahoo! To answer a few questions...

The original FHT cover (and the orig DTW cover) were actually both photos done by a really fantastic artist: Jonathan Barkat (you can see the original picture for the FHT cover on his website -- she was actually standing in the ocean and they photoshopped in the forest). I love his work (and one of the pictures on his website totally inspired a scene in DTW).

I think the original plan was to just change the covers with the paperback but so many people saw the DTW cover and loved it that they decided to change it for the hardback -- I truly love that one. She's so eerie!!

I wish I knew who the models were in both but I don't. I never even found out who they were for the first covers.

Thanks for sharing in the happy news! I also loved the original covers for both FHT and DTW and I love these just as much -- I've been totally lucky in the cover department!!!

They're not going to use the blue cover for The Dead-Tossed Waves hardcover? That one is PERFECT!

But the new ones are still nice.

I loved your book, just finished it last night, er, this morning actually (stayed up very, very late to finish it...then the story infiltrated my dreams). The original cover for FHT is very compelling...it's why I picked it up in the first place...and more fitting with who Mary is and reflective of her life in the Forest (does Mary wear makeup? unless I missed this in my mad dash to see if she makes it to the ocean?). I'm disappointed to learn they are going to replace the cover to DTW (I like consistent covers for books I keep to read over and over again)...but I am looking forward to reading it. :)

Regardless, thanks for the story...I will definitely be recommending.

I love the new covers. So awesome.

I can't wait for DTW!

I'm honestly disappointed. I really liked the other cover to DTW much better. The matching cover with FHT would've been awesome.

And my only problem with the paperback cover for FHT is that the girl looks to modern. *shrugs* So honestly, I'm not too thrilled about the covers. =( But it's not the covers I'm buying, it's the books. The covers aren't what is important to me.

I loved the original covers and really do no care for the new ones.

The original FHT cover was what drew me to it. I'm surprised the publisher went in this direction. But, if you're happy with it, congrats!

They're nice, but yeah, i gotta say i loved the old FHT cover better. The new one makes it seem like she could just be a goth girl lurking around the mall, whereas the old one had much my mystery. Glad i have my 1st edition ;)

First of all, I loved The Forest of Hands and Teeth. Is my favorite book of 2009.

Now with the covers:

I'm sorry, but I'm very disappointed. Honestly, I don't like any of the new covers. The original DTW cover was perfect, it matched very well with the original FHT cover, which -by the way- is way better than the new one because, as somebody here already pointed out, she looks very modern. She looks like a rocker, like a gothic, like a vampire-fan. I feel like this is some intent to attract teen vampire fans and people don't get that there are readers that are too sick of this "vampire boom" and are looking for a change and this book was one of them and now with that cover... it goes with the flow. Nothing new, nothing different there. I don't think it captures the essence of the story.

And now, people like me who have the first edition, will get a sequel with a cover that looks like a Sarah Dessen's...

The new covers are nice but the old ones win hands down. The new model is pretty but she looks way too modern. If i had to choose between buying the book with the new cover or waiting to see if I could find it with the old cover, I'd rather wait.

Carrie - I cannot tell you how much I've enjoyed reading The Forest of Hands and Teeth, so much so in fact that I recommended it to the Head Librarian at our local library, who is currently putting together a brand new adult section. She just informed me last week that they have ordered your wonderful book for the new section!

Again, and sincerely, it was THE best YA novel I have read in a long, long time.

Can not WAIT for Dead Tossed Waves to hit the stores in 2010 :)
