The Big News: Another Sale!!

Hey Y'all!  We're back from Curacao and had a fantastic time!  I promise to post more about it soon (and to post more pics) but first I wanted to share that news I talked about before I left... I've sold a third book to Delacorte Press!  Squee!!!  I don't have much more info about it -- we're not sure yet what the book will be (if it will be another book set in the same world as The Forest of Hands and Teeth and its sequel or totally different) but I do know that it should be coming out in Spring 2011.  Yay!!!!

Brainz for everyone to celebrate!

That's so exciting! Congrats!

I'm wondering though, are you a little nervous at the prospect of being contracted to write something you haven't even thought of imagining yet? Or was it that way with the sequel to FH&T.

Hey Samantha - great question! It happened the same way with the sequel to FHT -- they second book in the contract was unspecified and after people in house read the final draft they asked if I could write a sequel/companion. I actually like knowing there will be a home for what I write next and knowing that I can work with my editor from conception so I can be sure to write something she'll like! It's also nice to know that I have another year of full time writing - lol!

YAY! It's so nice to hear they have faith in your writing before the first book is even out. Awesome news!!

Congrats! Completely awesome!

A little curious on the business side here though. In the first deal it was a two book contract, so it was just a matter of finishing the contract. What spawned the second contract?

I assumed in most cases it would be a proposal for a third book.

Wait, am I reading the answer above wrong? I read that as describing the second book, but the third was also requested the same way?

Wow Carrie!-- congrats!
It's so heartening to hear publishers ARE still buying books amid all the gloom and doom of the publishing world right now.
Way to go!

Thanks everyone! I can't tell you how much all your congrats mean!!

Good question Patrick -- the first contract was two books: FHT and Untitled Book 2. I was just telling Samantha that my experience with an unknown book 3 is the same as it was for an unknown book 2 so I'd already gone through the prospect of being contracted for (and like the comfort of knowing the book has a home).

As for how the contract for the third book came about... the contract for the first two books isn't over yet, but once I'd turned in the rough draft of the second book my agent and editor talked and my editor made an offer. I didn't submit a proposal and I tend to compare it to the situation to multi-book deals where the second book is unknown.

Hopefully that made sense... :)
